My old boss from the Missouri Historical Society viewing a Confederate Battle Flag from the Battle of Franklin, TN - Nov. 30, 1864.
The amazing flag curator, Steve Allie. My three days working with this gentleman taught me a great deal. If you are a fan of the movie Glory...you can hear Steve's voice as he says "Fire" just as the 54th Mass. marches towards the beach near the end of the movie. As you may have guessed, Steve was also a pretty good Civil War re-enactor.
And my one and only published article. Museum work didn't pay the bills, but I had one incredible year working with artifacts that few people ever get the chance to see. Among them, a couch from Lincoln's funeral car, the spurs worn by CSA General Albert Sydney Johnson at Shiloh, one of Cortez's cannons used to defeat the Aztecs, and the stop watch used by Charles Lindbergh during his famous flight, and the replica of the Spirit of St. Louis flown by Jimmy Stewart in the film about the same.
Written in yellow across the white bar is "Victory or Death". During his research, Steve concluded that the flag was most probably carried by the 20th Tennessee.
